Obituary for Ralph Holweck

Mr. Ralph Holweck, 89, formerly of 9731 Oak Hill Road, Woodsboro, Md. went into the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ on August 21, 2018. Born on June 12, 1929 in Warren, Ohio, he was the son of the late Rudolph Carl and Margaret Freda Otte Holweck. He was the husband of Helen Elizabeth “Peggy” Summers Holweck. They were married on June 10, 1951. Prior to graduation from Coolidge High School, Washington, D.C., Mr. Holweck joined the Navy Reserves and was sworn in at the Washington Naval Yard. Following high school graduation in 1948 he became active Navy and trained at the great Lakes Naval Station, IL. He received additional gunners mate training in Biloxi, Miss. and was later stationed in Norfolk, VA. He was part of the Naval Task Force on the USS Stanton Berlin Airlift. He was honorably discharged as a gunners mate 2nd class petty officer and received the Berlin Airlift, Expert Marksman, Good Conduct and Cold War medals. Mr. Holweck was a 1969 graduate of University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history and education. He received his Masters equivalent and was employed as the assistant principal with West Park High School in Baltimore City, retiring in 1983. He continued to instruct Driver’s education many years into his retirement. He and his wife were also dairy farmers on Oak Hill Road near Woodsboro, Md. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Creagerstown, where he served several times as assisting pastor, lay reader for sermon lessons and helped give communion to shut-ins. He was a life member of Glenn W. Eyler American Legion Post, Woodsboro and was armourer of 40-8 Voltaire Post 155. He was also a member and past president of Mt. Airy Kiwanas; cub master of Pack 740, Mt. Airy; assistant scout master of troop 460, Mt. Airy; and past president of Carroll County Association for Handicap Citizens. He enjoyed 10-pin bowling and was the senior state bowling champion in 2001 as well as taking flying lessons until his early 80’s. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and son, Rick, to England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Canada and across the United States. Surviving are children, Lt. Col Ret. Ralph Dennis Holweck and wife Gail of Orlando, Fla, Margaret Elizabeth Schaeffer and husband, Craig of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa, Randall Kurt Holweck and wife Dorraine of Shepherdstown, WV, Richard Lee Holweck of Frederick, Md., Robert Carl Holweck and wife Tracey of Belcamp, Md.: grandchildren, Jason Dennis Holweck and wife Jennifer, Calvin Lee Schaeffer and wife Aniko, Brian Holweck, Renee Holweck Monteleone and husband Andrew, Noah Dakota Holweck and wife Mary, Tabetha Holweck Virts and husband John: step-grandchildren, Tony Holweck, Sara Lee Holweck Matzen and husband Matt: great grandchildren, Justin Keith Holweck, Veronica Virts, Nathan Vaughn Schaeffer, Daniel Monteleone, Aiden Holweck: brother Edmond Charles Holweck and wife Etta Jane of Clarksville, Md. He was predeceased by grandson, Keith Andrew Schaeffer in 2002. The funeral service is Saturday August 25 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The Rev. Wayne Blaser will officiate. Friends will be received from 10-11 am in the church followed by service at 11am with interment in Creagerstown Cemetery. Luncheon to follow in the church hall. Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 8619 Blacks Mill Road, Creagerstown, Md. 21788.
