Obituary for Margaret Mae McCalla

Margaret Mae McCalla, age 91, of Gettysburg, PA and formerly of New Windsor, passed away peacefully with family by her side at Gettysburg Hospital on Friday, July 20, 2018.
She was born on September 12, 1926 in San Jon, New Mexico, the daughter of the late John O. and Jessie V. Cresap. She is survived by her two sons, John Carl McCalla of Baltimore and Michael Cresap McCalla of Gettysburg, his wife Carlene and grandchildren Gabrielle Anne and Carson Reed McCalla. She is also survived by brother, John Bruce Cresap and wife June, niece Sharon Julian and family and nephew, Skip Hodges.
Mrs. McCalla was a graduate of Eastern New Mexico College in 1948 with a degree in teaching. She taught school in Oregon, then joined the Women’s Army Corps. She was stationed at Fort Meade, MD for 3 years, 3 months and 2 days. While there she attended Loyola College and graduated with a master’s degree in education.
She met her husband, the late Carlos “Mac” McCalla while stationed at Fort Meade. They were married in Paris, France by both the French and Americans. Mac passed away in August 1981.
Margaret attended South End Baptist in Frederick, where she organized and conducted an outreach program for children, touching and changing many lives. Later she and many of the children went to First Missionary Baptist where they flourished. In the late 80’s she became a member of First Baptist in Frederick and was a longtime member of the Golden Circle Sunday school class, most of whom are gone but remembered with love. Also remembered are Doris Brittain, Sherry Rollins, Ann Whitehouse and Kitty Young.
Margaret “Grammy” McCalla had lived in Gettysburg for the past 5 ½ years. She enjoyed being involved in her grandchildren’s lives, attending baseball games, horse shows and many school concerts. Her joy was talking with her family over dinner and singing with the ukulele. She also enjoyed visiting the library and reading every day with her Buddy dog in her lap. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25 at Hartzler Funeral Home - Libertytown, 11802 Liberty Rd., Frederick, with her sons, John and Michael McCalla, officiating. Interment will follow in Linganore Cemetery, Unionville.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or church of one’s choice.
The family invites you to leave a message or memory on our “tribute wall” at www.hartzlerfuneralhome.com.
