Obituary for Lucille M. Black

Lucille M. Black, age 89, of Union Bridge, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at Lorien of Taneytown.
Born November 19, 1927 in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Juliet Butler Harpe. She was the wife of the late Charles Edward Black Jr., who predeceased her in 1992.
Mrs. Black was an active member of Strawbridge United Methodist Church, where she was a choir member, in charge of communion, had served as the president of the usher board and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was recently named “mother of the church”. She was formerly employed at Springfield State Hospital for 21 years, retiring in 1989. She also worked in private homes for families in the area.
She enjoyed her time spent with her Sisters of Faith and Lunch Bunch groups, as well as going to the Westminster Senior Center. She loved to play cards and shop.
Surviving are daughter, Patricia Davis and husband, Darrell of Union Bridge; sons, Charles Black III and wife Barbara of New Windsor and Irvin Black Sr. and wife Tracey of Union Bridge; grandchildren, Heather Green, Charles Black IV, Monica Calwell, Irvin T. Black Jr., Jason Butler, A. Nicole Davis, Lauren Davis and Matthew Davis; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Shirley Harpe in 1945; son, Maurice N. Black in 1998; sisters, Lillian Brown and Romaine Smith; and brother, J. Thomas Harpe.
The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, on Friday, November 3 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at Strawbridge United Methodist Church, New Windsor on Saturday, November 4 at 11 a.m. Ambassador Blango Ross will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Joy Cemetery, Uniontown.
