Obituary for John Francis Kennedy, Jr.

Mr. John Francis Kennedy, Jr., age 79, of Walkersville, died Monday, June 19, 2017. Born October 22, 1937 in Frederick, he was the son of the late John F. Kennedy Sr. and Daisy Hutts Kennedy. He was the husband of Sharon Smith Kennedy for more than 55 years.
Mr. Kennedy was a 1956 graduate of St. John the Evangelist School on E. Second St., Frederick and he also attended the church. He then served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a lance corporal and was discharged on January 29, 1964. He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in 1967 and a master’s degree from Frostburg State University in the early 1970’s. He retired in May 1996 from NIST (formerly the National Bureau of Standards) where he worked in administration. The last few years of his tenure, he was thrilled to indulge his forestry-loving side and helped to run the campus’ experimental deer control program.
Mr. Kennedy was an active member of Independent Hose Co. 1 of Frederick, with his father, until his move to Walkersville in 1970. He was also a life member of Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11, as was his father. He loved the great outdoors, splitting wood, hiking, biking and even rock climbing. He was an avid runner and ran 50-mile marathons. He was a woodworking enthusiast, making shelves, stools, animals, toolboxes, pot racks and even a cat tree. The art of photography was his passion and he loved capturing it all on film: negatives, slides and digital.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Tanya Kennedy Luminati and husband Steve of Fairfax Station, VA; a grandson, Alexander Luminati; a sister, Barbara Watson of Frederick and three nephews, Dennis, Michael and Thomas Watson.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, June 25 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with Rev. Dahl Drenning, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
