Obituary for Bernice F. Foley

On Saturday May 26, 2018, Bernice “Dolly” Forster Foley, passed away at Artis Senior Living of Boca Raton in Boca Raton, Fl., where she resided for the past six months. Born on September 2, 1930 in Norristown Pa., Bernice was the oldest daughter of the late Theodore Arthur and Isabel Fidelia (Bigler) Forster.

Bernice attended St. Ann’s Catholic grade school, Memorial Junior High and Phoenixville High School in Phoenixville Pa, where she grew up. She graduated from West Chester State Teacher’s College (now West Chester University) in 1952 and moved to Reading Pa. to teach third grade at Charles Foos Elementary School, where she taught for three and a half years. While teaching in Reading, she met her husband Jack, an Air Force Sergeant whose parents lived next door to her.

After their marriage in Phoenixville on February 4, 1956, they were stationed briefly in Pittsburgh, Pa. before transferring to the Washington DC area in 1958. Bernice was a homemaker while their three children were young, returning to teaching in the early 1970’s at their parish school, St. Bernadette’s, in Silver Spring Md. where she taught for 12 years. She finished her teaching career at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Silver Spring, Md., retiring in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Joseph Foley. She is survived by three children; Ruth Foley Riley wife of James Michael Riley, Mt. Airy Md., Kathleen Foley Schirling, Boynton Beach, Fl., and John Joseph Foley, Littlestown, Pa.; and seven grandchildren, Kathleen Riley Peterson wife of David Andrew Peterson IV of Astoria, NY; Jennifer Kerrie Schirling Siegel, wife of Bradley Ethan Siegel, Boca Raton, Fl.; Caitlin Foley Milhimes wife of Pete Milhimes of Littlestown, Pa., Nicholas Jay Foley, Washington DC.; Christopher John Schirling, Boynton Beach, Fl., Kevin McMaster Riley and Andrew Foley Riley, both of Mt. Airy, Md.

One younger sibling, Phyllis Forster Cardwell of Baltimore Md. predeceased her in 1994.

Bernice and her husband enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She had a life long love of music, playing the piano as a child, the clarinet in high school and the organ as an adult. After retiring, they moved to Rockville Md, enjoying many evenings with their friends at Fallsgrove and traveled extensively, often by cruise and many times choosing a cruise where their favorite concert pianist, Brooks Ahren, was performing. After Jack’s death in 2012, Bernice relocated to Boynton Beach Fl. to live near her daughter Kathy, enjoying the warm weather and the friends she made there who were so welcoming.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday June 4th at 11:30am at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Libertytown, Md, with visitation at 10:30am and interment after the Mass in the Parish cemetery.
