Betty Y. Wise, 85, died peacefully July 14, 2012 at the Lorien Nursing and Rehab Center in Taneytown. Born August 20, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John D. and Marion D. Young and the widow of Charles E. (Ed) Wise, Jr. Betty was a graduate of New Windsor High School in the class of 1943 and later attended Strayer Business College in Baltimore. She was employed as a secretary in the office of the Maryland Farm Bureau where she met her husband, Ed. They lived in Baltimore and upon retirement returned to Carroll County where they spent the remainder of their lives doing volunteer services for many organizations. Betty volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Carroll County Hospital, the Springfield Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary and Canteen, the Carroll County Farm Museum, the Carroll County Historical Society, the Carroll County 4-H Clubs and the Maryland 4-H All Stars. Betty was honored as the Carroll County Volunteer of the Year in 2000 by Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Inc. A lifelong lover of music and especially singing, Betty was co-founder of the Carroll County Choral Society and participated in that ensemble for many years. She was also instrumental in the start up of the Carroll County Choral Arts Society (now the Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County). She was a charter member of the Carroll County Community Concert Association. While living in Baltimore, Betty was a member of the Handel Choir of Baltimore and remained a lifelong supporter of the ensemble. Along with her music, Betty loved gardening (especially her roses), traveling and sports, in particular, the "O's". She was also a gracious hostess for gatherings of her large extended family. Betty is survived by five sisters, Dorothy Henderson of Baton Rouge, LA; Erma Gebb of Carlisle, PA; Thelma Flippin of Atlanta, GA; Ruby Bechtold of South Windsor, CT; Margaret Whitacre and husband Richard of Bridgewater, VA; one brother, Stewart D. Young and wife Gail of Westminster; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Young of Baltimore and Betty Young of New Windsor; nieces and nephews of the Young and Wise families. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. John D. Young Jr. and Ralph M. Young.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4 at Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren, 26 Pipe Creek Rd.. Private interment in Pipe Creek Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, Inc., 255 Clifton Blvd., Westminster, MD 21157 or to Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County, P.O. Box 512, Westminster, MD 21158.
